The Gorcums Museum is housed in the old city hall, a beautiful building on Grote Markt. The museum tells the history of the city, has a collection of paintings from the Golden Age of Gorinchem, and exhibits the works of local contemporary artists as well.
The first floor exhibits give you an overview of the history of the city from the Middle Ages to the present, from the Martyrs of Gorcum, the battle against the water, the fortifications and well-known and lesser known ‘Gorcumers’, up to the inimitable Mayor Van Rappard (1906-1994).
The museum also presents temporary exhibitions on an ongoing basis, the one time about design, the next an artist’s retrospective, then an exhibition showing the history of the city and its environs, and so on. Always something new, always a surprise!
Entrance is free every Wednesday and on ‘Cultural Sunday’.
